Details

The Students' Cooperative Association (SCA) is a nonprofit housing cooperative in Eugene, Oregon, owned and operated by its members. Founded in the early 20th century, the SCA operates three houses near the University of Oregon campus on Alder Street: the Campbell Club, the Lorax Manor, and the Janet Smith (geared toward graduate students).

Members share house responsibilities, prepare local and organic communal meals daily, and make decisions collectively through consensus — making this one of the most community-oriented housing options in Lane County.

Cost: SCA offers some of the most affordable housing in Eugene, starting as low as $322/month. Rates include shared meals, utilities, and communal living costs.

Eligibility: Open to students attending any institution of higher learning in Lane County, including the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, trade programs, and other accredited colleges. The SCA is explicitly welcoming to students from all backgrounds.

Application: Contact the office at scaoffice.recruitment@gmail.com or call 541-683-1112 during office hours (Monday–Thursday, 1:30–5:30 PM). Prospective members typically tour a house and attend a meal before applying.

Case manager notes: For trans clients enrolled in any Lane County school, SCA is worth knowing about — it's genuinely low-cost, runs on community norms that tend to be queer-friendly, and operates outside the traditional landlord-tenant power dynamic. Not the right fit for everyone, but for the right client it's an exceptional option.

Eligibility

Students enrolled at any institution of higher learning in Lane County: University of Oregon, Lane Community College, trade/vocational programs, or any other accredited local college. Members must be actively enrolled.
